William Hogarth Marriage A-la-Mode: 2, The Tête à Tête about 1743 Oil on canvas, 69.9 x 90.8 cm Bought, 1824 NG114 https://www.nationalgallery.org.uk/paintings/NG114

In this webinar, Alice Insley (curator, Tate Britain) will discuss the recent exhibition Hogarth and Europe at Tate Britain. For the first time, this brings together artworks by the celebrated British artist, William Hogarth, and his continental contemporaries, including Chardin in Paris, Troost in Amsterdam, and Longhi in Venice, to explore the continuities, parallels, and divergences that might emerge when seen side-by-side. Through this it explores the ways in which artists grappled with the rapidly changing world around them in the mid-eighteenth century: their shifting social status, the city as the setting and subject for their work and the global networks of trade and exploitation connected to this, and new ideas of society and individuality.
